About Us

Derek’s extensive career in international business began in 1980, when he joined British Steel Corporation as Area Manager (Latin America and Spain). Six years later, he was named Executive Vice President, North America of the Welsh Development Agency (WDA), where he led teams based in Wales, the U.S. and Canada. He also held the title of Executive Director, Far East for the WDA, directing teams in the UK, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

In 1994, Derek was asked by the CEO of WDA to relocate to Boston, MA, to oversee the organization’s North America operations from the field. There, Derek implemented a major restructuring of the North America team, introduced a new strategy and action plan and built the organization’s first integrated investor management program.

In 1998, Derek returned to the private sector, assuming the position of Vice President, Sales for INT’L.com, a localization services provider based in Framingham, MA. In that role, he led the business development team that doubled overall revenue, to $14 million, by 1998. He played a key role in assimilating the sales teams from two acquisitions that resulted in INT’L.com becoming one of the country’s top 3 localization service providers.

Derek has also served as Director of Business Development at WorldLink Technologies, a Bellevue, WA, translation services company, where he worked with the team to increase sales growth by 30% in 2005 and by another 24% in 2006.

His business development experience also encompasses TeleGea, a Waltham, MA, e-commerce company. As Director of International Business Development, Derek initiated the company’s first international sales and marketing plan, targeting 50 companies in the UK, Europe and Australia, helping to develop licensing opportunities with partner companies totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Derek founded Perkins Associates to provide independent consultation on inward investment promotion best practice and to offer presentation skills training. He now works globally with individual IPAs (Investment Promotion Agencies) and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to review investment promotion strategy, marketing, investor management and presentation excellence.
